LENS Neurofeedback

“We tend to think of the brain in terms of its other critical physical and chemical domains. But its plasticity, its ability to change and to learn, seems to lay primarily in its electrical, oscillatory properties—in short, in the way it fires.”

~ Sebern Fisher

Healing at the brain level

WHAT IS THE HISTORY?

The benefits fueling the success of the LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System developed by Ochs Labs) were first discovered in 1990, when they recognized that leveraging the brain’s innate neuroplasticity to facilitate change led to a higher level of functioning and a reduction in symptoms in a short amount of time. Ochs Labs, a dynamic research and software development company located in the San Francisco Bay Area, has providers across 36 countries around the world. Their design team has created and honed a software user interface they call smart technology: intuitive, easy to use, and incredibly effective. They continue to be a leader in neurofeedback technology as well as other medical devices that improve a persons’ quality of life.

WHY IS IT DIFFERENT?

Each person’s brain waves (EEG signals) are unique to them and are constantly changing from

moment to moment. Utilizing these EEG “fingerprints,” the patented LENS technology

customizes the feedback in real time. Other forms of neurofeedback may require 40-80

sessions to elicit change and require 30+ minutes in each session to obtain results. The LENS,

on the other hand, is much faster acting, for instance the average number of 15-20 minute

sessions for mild to moderate TBI is only 4-8 sessions. (Often fewer for children)

HOW SAFE IS IT?

With over 1 million people having benefited from LENS, there have been ZERO adverse event

reports registered with the FDA.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL SESSION?

In your first session, you will complete 3 questionnaires that your LENS Provider then uses to

customize a treatment plan unique to you and your physiology. During a session, sensors are

placed on the head or body and used to monitor the real-time brainwave activity being emitted

at the skin surface. Your brain waves are unique to you— no two people’s are the same, and

they change from one moment to the next. The LENS identifies your unique EEG signature, and

uses this information to provide custom feedback.

WHAT CAN LENS HELP?

ANXIETY:

Symptoms of anxiousness may include anxiety attacks, nail biting, inability to be still, substance

dependency, insomnia, a jumpy leg, or even simply a general sense of ill-ease. The patented

LENS technology matches the feedback to each person’s own physiological (neurological)

profile in real time. Anxiety is often the first symptom clients report dropping with LENS

sessions.

HEAD INJURY:

Automobile accidents, sports injuries, and even small bumps on the head can impact normal

brain functioning and lead to many symptoms if not addressed. Mild to severe TBI can result in

decreased brain functioning and sometimes, depending on the severity, a major disruption in

motor and other skills greatly affecting an individual’s quality of life.

ATTENTION:

Issues with attention is one of the most common childhood disorders & can continue through

adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms may include difficulty staying focused/inattention,

difficulty controlling behavior, impulsivity/ hyperactivity (over-activity).

TRAUMA:

According to the National Center for PTSD (ptsd.va.gov), 7-8 out of every 100 people in the

U.S. will experience PTSD at some point in their life, and about 8 million adults have PTSD

during a given year. With a typical PTSD symptom presentation, the client begins to experience

relief from their symptoms

(such as insomnia, anxiousness, restless sleep, nightmares, explosiveness, reactivity,

triggers, etc.) within the first few sessions, making Neurofeedback an efficient and fast-acting

modality.

PERFORMANCE:

The benefits of neurofeedback extend beyond injury and trauma. Increased clarity of thought,

reduction in brain fog, improved motivation and a decrease in procrastination are frequently

reported after only a few sessions. By optimizing the central nervous system, LENS empowers

those wanting peak performance from the playing field to the board room.

How is Intensive Counseling different from Traditional Counseling?  Nick offers a few things to think about when considering Intensive over Traditional Counseling (50-minute session):

  1. Time Focused – Traditional counseling can be nebulous a lot of times. Each session can take on it’s own form and may not necessarily build from a previous session.  When starting traditional counseling, there is not always a pre-existing end point determined and is often left undefined.  Intensives are much more focused, intentional and have a fixed end-time in mind.

  2. Goal Focused –  Traditional counseling often take several weeks to properly establish clear or even realistic goals.  Nick is constantly working with each client in the Intensive to establish goals prior, during and following the process; beginning with the ending in mind.

  3. Depth Focused – Intensive counseling asks from the beginning, what is going on under the surface?  What are the core issues that each client is addressing?  Traditional counseling may look at some of these things at the deeper level, but has found that it can take some time to reach that point for some clients.

Intensive Sessions

Half-day (3-hours) or full-day (6-hours) intensive sessions.  Nick developed intensives because several clients voiced that their normal counseling hour also seemed to end too quickly or would state, “We were just getting to something good!”
